Fall 2012 Conference Class with Dawn Liu-Smyth

Dawn Liu-Smyth is an emerging fibre artist, exploring wool fibre and felting as textile and 3-dimensional form. Dawn has privately taught small group felting workshops to create felted vessels and small tapestries in Canada and the UK. She designed and taught a children’s felting workshop in which children visited an art gallery, chose a piece of art and later interpreted it in a felt tapestry (UK).

Dawn taught high school in the York Region Board of Education (1995-2003) in the Art, Photography, English and Drama departments. She also owned and operated Gurgles and Giggles Photography (2003-2009), specializing in infant and maternity portraiture. Dawn has a Bachelor of Education and Ontario Teacher Certification from the University of Ottawa, studied drama at York University, Glendon College and received a Bachelor of Applied Art – Radio and Television Arts from Ryerson Polytechnical University in Toronto.

Dawn’s list of exhibitions includes: Paradigms, mixed media exhibit at Neilson Park Creative Centre, Etobicoke, March 2012; Wabi-Sabi – Exploring the beauty beneath, Photographs on canvas (solo exhibition) at Workshop Gallery, Toronto,  February 2008. She has attended a Wet-Felting workshop with Norm and Gio Gaudet (Toronto-based Felt Garment designers) and  Wet-Felting 3-dimensional objects with Deborah Allen, a UK-based fibre artist. Felted Vessels (25) All Levels
Use merino wool roving and the wet-felting technique to create a 3-dimensional vessel. Explore colour, form and texture as you work with wool fibres and embellish with silk and other materials which are felted into the surface of your design. Complete a unique vessel that can be used as a candle or pencil holder, vase wrap or whatever else your imagination can muster. Pre-requisite: Wet-felting is a very physical process, so be prepared to use arms and hands to roll and manipulate the felt in process. Suitable for both beginner and experienced fibre artists. Bring: Scissors, 2 old towels & old pair of panty hose. Kit $25
