Knit/Purl Textured Patterns with Cynthia MacDougall

Behind the Seams of Knit and Purl…

There are many ways of combining knit and purl designs, from ribbing and seed stitch, to pictographic images such as hearts and anchors. And, Cynthia MacDougall shares all at informal demos in the A Needle Pulling Thread Booth #285 on Friday, April 24, 2015 from 10:30 to 12:30 and 4:30 to 6:30.

Cynthia MacDougall - nanus checkerboardThis mint coloured project is a blanket I titled “Nanu’s Checkerboard”.  It’s an adaptation of a shawl pattern in Shawls and Scarves called Grandma’s Checkerboard.  I made it as a gift for a special little girl, so I no longer have the piece.  The knitting uses seed stitch, and a checkerboard of 4 stitches each knit and purl, switched every fourth row to 4 stitches each of purl and knit.

This red blanket is a free pattern that is available on the website of Canadian Guild of Knitters, www.cgknitters.ca .  It is called the “Anything Blanket”, and it can be made using any yarn in any size.  This project is made entirely of 4 stitches knit and 4 stitches purl, alternated every four rows.  The example in the photo is the size of a doll blanket, which is warming the little knitting sheep as she contemplates her next project.

Cynthia MacDougall - river rib toque 1The gold hat is the River Rib Toque.  This piece was featured in the Festive 2010 issue of A Needle Pulling Thread.  The pattern was originally designed as the “Chapeau Moncton” because I was inspired to make it while on vacation in New Brunswick.  This hat is a “3 x 3 rib”, which is “broken” every few rows to give an undulating effect to represent the ripples on a river.  My photo of this project is on a static hat form.
